Northgrippian Park

Northgrippian Park is a rewilding project envisioned for the coming years in the southern foothills of Gredos, within the Sierra de El Raso (Candeleda).

We invite you to stay tuned as we share new steps on this journey to restore nature and reconnect with the wild.

¿What is rewilding?

Rewilding is a forward-looking approach to ecosystem restoration that goes beyond recreating specific habitats, such as closed-canopy forests. Instead, it focuses on rebuilding fully functional ecosystems and restoring lost trophic interactions. These initiatives aim to recover ecological processes and revive local biodiversity. Notable examples include the reintroduction of wolves in Yellowstone, the Oostvaardersplassen nature reserve in the Netherlands, and Pleistocene Park in Siberia.

“At first I struggled to identify the scientific principles that inform rewilding. To formulate principles you must know what outcome you are trying to archieve. But rewilding, unlike conservation, has no fixed objective: […] The process is the outcome.”

George Monbiot, FERAL (2013)

About Northgrippian Park

The Northgrippian Park project seeks to restore the ecological functions that once shaped this landscape, replacing the role of traditional livestock with that of the great wild herbivores of the Iberian Peninsula and reviving the natural dynamics of the Northgrippian. It represents a firm commitment to biodiversity and a unique opportunity to understand how ecology and prehistory intertwine within an exceptional setting. A place where natural processes can return and flourish, while creating new opportunities for the region through ecotourism and science.

Here begins the dream of bringing the wild back to Gredos.

Iberian Mountain Savanna

The open canopy oak-scrub vegetation of the southern slopes of Gredos are often described as a degraded ecosystem, replacing what would naturally be a dense, closed-canopy oak forest. However, emerging perspectives suggest that this savanna-like landscape may instead be an echo of the habitats that existed before human influence and the lost of large herbivores.
